even your skin tone naturally

2021 edit: i no longer subscribe to or support the “all-natural” label. more here.

the last official Skin Week post is today! (tomorrow is a review & surprise for all y’all. i WILL still post on all the other skin questions you had!)

so to round off Skin Week, we’re gonna delve into how to even out your skin tone naturally!

even out your skin tone naturally

what causes uneven skin tone?

  • overproduction of melanin
  • genetics
  • excessive sun exposure
  • hormones
  • skin trauma/scarring
  • inflammation/acne
  • drugs

what can we do to help even out skin tone?

  • raw apple cider vinegar (acv)– you all know i’m a fan of raw acv. it contains amino acids, mineral salts, and plenty of vitamins. there’s also sulfur in it, which makes it a great skin toner and an effective skin spot, age spot and acne fader. to use this method, soak a cotton ball or pad with pure, raw apple cider vinegar, and apply directly to the skin up to twice daily. it can be drying, so test it first!
  • raw honeywash your face with honey 🙂 or combine into an oatmeal scrub/mask
  • chamomile – this can be used as a toner, by brewing a strong tea with a chamomile tea bag and a 1/2 cup of water. let it steep for a few hours, strain and combine the tea with a 1/2 cup of witch hazel. use after washing for natural home remedy for brightening the skin, and make sure to store it in the refrigerator.
  • milk – milk can lighten your skin for a more even tone by working on melanin to lighten the skin, and helping to diminish the appearance of darker blemishes and scars.
  • licorice (root) extract – it’s a great anti-inflammatory, and is great at fading skin marks and smoothing the skin.
to use this method, mix the extract with either distilled water or green tea, and soak a soft cotton cloth in the mixture. then apply to your clean face for 15 minutes.
  • lemon – as we talked about in how to heal your acne scars naturally, citric acid in lemons is a natural way to lighten and even out your skin tone. you can apply lemon juice to your clean face daily, and wash it off after letting it sit for 15-20 minutes. remember to wash it off completely before going into the sun!
  • turmeric – turmeric can be taken in pill form available at you local health food or organic store, OR you can apply it directly to the skin. try this recipe: mix 1 tablespoon turmeric, 1 tablespoon finely ground almonds or cornmeal,
and 2 tablespoons buttermilk. apply to your clean face and let it sit for 15-20 mins. rinse well & done!
  • oatmeal – oatmeal acts as a great exfoliator. you can add some raw honey to make more of a thicker paste. apply to your clean face, and let sit for 10 minutes. then rub your face for a few minutes before rinsing off well.
  • egg whites – beat an egg white and rub onto your clean skin, letting it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing well with water. you can also try this mask recipe: mix 1 egg white, 1 tablespoon raw honey, 1 1/2 teaspoons witch hazel, and 2 teaspoons lemon juice. apply to your clean skin, and let sit for 10-15 minutes. rinse well & done! be sure to store in the fridge if you don’t use it all!

use these 2 to 4 weeks before giving up if you’re not seeing drastic results 🙂 natural ways can take a little longer, but will be better for your skin and your body!

have you guys tried any of these? want to? let’s hear it!

  1. Hey gals,
just an FYI test everything first. Honey broke my face out, so did Apple Cider Vinegar. I recommend diluting with equal parts water.

  2. I bought DermalMD Even Tone serum for a friend who has age spots and I’m still waiting on her results. She did say she loves the product as a skin serum.

  3. Just wondering if anyone has tried the milk method? If so how long do you leave it on/ do you wash it off??

  4. I am a believer in lemon juice as a skin lightener for dark spots. After only a couple of weeks I am noticing a difference. I apply just to the dark spot with a Q Tip and leave it on as long as possible (several hours), then rinse with water. I can’t wait to stop wearing makeup and concealer! Also using the OCM is a dream for my skin. So many improvements with no chemicals is a wonderful thing!

  5. I bought licorice root extract at the health store can I use it directly on my face or do I need to add something to it. Also, can I leave it on overnight on my face.

  6. Hi,
I was wondering what does improving skin tone really mean? does it make you darker? lighter? im sorry if it seems like a dumb question but how will i like learn if i dont ask…help me out please 🙂

    1. I don’t really get it either. Is it to make acne spots go away? Or freckles? I have very fair skin, but I have super rosy cheeks (it looks like I’m blushing constantly) and a ton of freckles. Very rarely do I have acne. What would using these washes do for me? Thanks!

  7. Hey!

I’ve been using all natural products to clear up my acne and old scars but recently I’ve come across a problem. Only about every other time I use acv, my face gets really red and feels really warm. I use it every morning with a cotton ball. Am I doing something wrong? Should I dilute it? Maybe my face is irritated because the acv is drying out my skin? What would you suggest?

    1. hey brinda! sounds like it’s too strong and you need to dilute it. try 1 part acv to 2 or 3 parts water and see if that helps. if it doesnt get better, i’d suggest trying another natural method and ditching the acv 🙂 hope this helps!

  8. i agree with everything everyone have said on this website. i had a lot of uneven skin because when i was younger i would only wash my cheeks & middle of my forehead and the tip of my nose as that is what i saw on TV commercials 😛 after being in my late teens i realized the i shouldn’t have followed the commercials as they are just phony 😛

I’ve used everything you’ve listed and my skin is much more even in color and tone and i get very.few pimples and the ones i do are very small and go away in few days by themselves. i also have fewer age lines than i did in my early teens and I’m 27 now.

one thing I’ve never tried is licorice (root) extract beside using it with the soaked cloth can you add few drops in oatmeal mixture??? or with honey or lemon??? also, I’ve found few on amazon and e-bay but they are ranging at different prices with different sizes, some said organic while others didn’t say anything. how would you know which is better than other?

    thanks in advance
