sea buckthorn oil – benefits & uses

if there’s one type of ingredient that i preference over others in the crunchy world, it’d be oils. the vast array and uses for them is incredible. some oils are more “powerful” than others, and among these powerhouse oils is sea buckthorn oil.

pressed from both the seed and berry (for different uses), this tree berry oil can be used both externally and internally for a variety of purposes.

ABOUT SEA BUCKTHORN OIL:

what is sea buckthorn?

as pictured below, sea buckthorn is a brightly colored berry tree in the himalayan region. generally speaking, SBO is known for its healing and rejuvenating the skin, helping with a wide array of skin issues – fine lines, rashes, scarring, cuts, burns, etc.  this oil can be taken from both the berry flesh and seeds of the berries.

sea buckthorn trees have survived the harsh climates in the himalayan mountain region since ancient times. the barren environment has caused sea buckthorn to develop high levels of omegas, antioxidants and other complex nutrients. a brand i support, seabuck wonders (NOT an affiliate; i personally support them), sources their oil from the himalayan region, where it’s more potent.

benefits of sea buckthorn berry oil:

sea buckthorn berry oil provides a rich supply of omega-7 (30-35%) as well as vitamin e, making SBO invaluable for your health and beauty routine. omega-7 may support, replenish, moisten mucus membranes that line the digestive urogenital tracts. another benefit of the internal use of this oil is that it supports hair and nails. by supporting cell health, sea buckthorn berry oil is also wonderful for topical skin treatments.

SB is the best source of omega-7 fatty acids. this plant-based omega provides the highest concentration of omega-7 naturally available as well as a host of vitamins and minerals. most other sources of omega-7 are isolated and simply do not contain the complex nutrition found naturally in SBO.

this berry oil is good for –

  • skin, hair and nail health
  • cell membrane nurturing
  • gastrointestinal and liver health
  • dental and gum health
  • healthy inflammation response

benefits of sea buckthorn seed oil:

with omegas-3, 6, 9, vitamins A and E, sea buckthorn seed oil stands out as the best plant based omega-3 source. the complex nutritional components of sea buckthorn seed oil work together to create a much more potent product than other omega-3 sources.

vitamins a & e are powerful antioxidants in sea buckthorn seed oil. they can support immunity and provide support for inflammatory conditions. antioxidants are known to support healthy white blood cell levels. omega-3 is known to support heart health. recent studies have shown that plant based omegas may be just as effective as fish based omegas in supporting heart health. omega-3 is also known to support brain health and liver health. sea buckthorn seed oil also works wonders as a topical treatment for skin support.

you can use these oils both internally and externally. because this is a DIY green beauty blog, i’ll include some of my favorite recipes using SBO below.

for these recipes i’ve used the oils from SeaBuck Wonders (link provided is NOT an affiliate link).

my favorite sea buckthorn oil recipes (topical) –

SKIN

face mask:

in any face mask mix you’re currently using, add a couple drops of SBO. my favorite face mask using SBO is the golden face mask, posted here.

reparative oil blend:

i’ve found this recipe is best stored in either a small rollerball glass or in a dark glass with a dropper, to control how much you use.  take 1/4 ounce (2 1/4 teaspoons) of your favorite carrier oil (since this will be on your face, consider rosehip, argan, grapeseed, or jojoba), add in 3 to 5 drops each of your favorite nourishing oil, including SBO.

for my rollerball glass eye serum, i used 1/4 ounce of rosehip seed oil, 4 drops SBO, 4 drops hemp seed oil, and 4 drops emu oil. it soaks in quickly and leaves my face feeling really soft.

lotion:

in your favorite DIY lotion recipe (mine will be up on sunday!), add or partially substitute in SBO for a nourishing oil component. in my recipe that yields 16 ounces, i add a full tablespoon. how much you use is truly up to you!

in this recipe, the dark orangey yellow of the SBO looks so cool mixed in with the deep olive green of the hemp seed oil:

makeup remover:

whichever oil you’re using to remove eye makeup, adding a few drops of SBO will nourish your eyelashes, encourage growth, as well as attend to fine lines and wrinkles in the eye area. it turns your makeup remover into a beauty powerhouse! i love using rosehip oil mixed with SBO. after the makeup is off, the leftover oils soak in quickly and leave the area super soft and hydrated.

HAIR

growth encouragement:

in your favorite herbal rinse, add 2 to 3 drops SBO to encourage hair growth at the scalp. my favorite is 16 ounces of freshly made rosemary rinse (i add a few sprigs of rosemary to a water bottle amount of water and make it like a tea). once it cools, i add 3 drops of SBO and shake often as i massage the mix into my hair (as oil and water don’t mix).

if you do oil treatments, simply add a few drops to your favorite hair oil blend, making sure to concentrate on working the SBO into your scalp.  adding rosemary EO and peppermint EO will boost this oil blend for growth encouragement also!

reparative oil blend:

in your favorite hair oil blend, add a few drops of SBO to keep your hair shiny, strong, and moisturized. here are some of my favorite DIY recipes for golden hair oil blends at a fraction of the cost you can purchase brand name versions for.

what are your favorite ways to use sea buckthorn oil?

NOTE:  products were provided to me free of charge from SeaBuck Wonders. that being said, i have purchased oils through them before this was generously offered. i would recommend their brand of sea buckthorn oil regardless, and have posts using SBO from before they very kindly provided anything to me! i am always honest with my readers. we’re here to better our health and lives; not to product-push.

  1. Thank you for this post. I have received my SBO in the mail today and I’m very excited to use it. I have a question. Would it be fine if I used the oil directly on the scalp with no other oil added?
